Fundación de Investigación–Mayagüez was established in 2024 as a sister site to FDI Clinical Research in San Juan, expanding our reach to Puerto Rico’s west coast. As part of the Alcanza Clinical Research Network, the Mayagüez site extends the network’s commitment to operational excellence, data quality, and patient-centered research.
The Mayagüez team is trained and proficient in FibroScan operation and collaborates with local imaging centers to perform study-required diagnostic procedures. Our experienced team provides a supportive, patient-focused environment where your safety, comfort, and privacy always come first. Led by experienced physicians and supported by a skilled clinical team, we partner with leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to offer clinical trials across a wide range of health conditions—bringing innovative research opportunities closer to the Mayagüez community.

Dr. William Hurtado-Santiago is a double Board-Certified Internist and Nephrologist with a passion for research. He has been practicing medicine since 2005 and has remained an academic. Moving into community-based research, Dr Hurtado’s site offers fibroscans to any person at no cost. Daily, the site completes anywhere between 3 to 5 fibroscans, centralizing this data for future trial opportunities. Collaborating with local practices, this site in Puerto Rico offers alternative medicines to a large rural Hispanic patient population. As the site’s primary Principal Investigator, Medical Director, and published physician, Dr. Hurtado spends a majority of his time educating the site’s underrepresented community within clinical trials that can provide the population with medical accessibilities that would otherwise not be available without his targeted approach to specific medicinal needs. His insight to the specific surrounding population needs has quickly aided the site with enrollment successes while benefiting the patient population simultaneously. Among his growing experience within Internal Medicine and Nephrology specialized clinical trials, the site has participated in indications such as CKD, NASH/MASH, Fatty Liver Disease, Cirrhosis, Metabolic Disorders, HIV, Liver Fibrosis, Vaccines, among other indications. -

Dr. Vivian Tamayo is a Board-Certified OB/GYN and certified HIV Specialist. With over 20 years of clinical experience and 3+ years of research experience, Dr. Tamayo adds a level of specialty to the Mayaguez site that has quickly added versatility to the site’s overall trial conduction capabilities. Dr. Tamayo is enthusiastic about accepting new challenges that allow her to apply her diverse professional experience to improve the health of her community, specifically from a population management and public health perspective. She is a keen strategic planner who believes that the formula for success for any given project is effective communication, teamwork and leading with an example of passion and compromise. Among her research trial experience, Dr. Tamayo has participated in the conduction of trials varying within a plethora of indications, among those, NASH/MASH, Liver Fibrosis, Cirrhosis, MASLD, SHTG, PrEP, HIV, Vaccine, HIV prevention in Mother-to-Child transmission, Maternal Infant studies, and other indications. Additionally, Dr. Tamayo is a published physician and bilingual in English and Spanish, allowing her to treat a more diverse patient population for any given clinical setting. -

Dr. Karlo Perez-Santiago M.D. is a newly Board-Certified Internal Medicine physician who is dedicating their medical career immediately to the world of research. Being motivated in the practices of Internal Medicine, Dr. Perez-Santiago remains readily available to any research trial opportunities presented. At the newly established Mayaguez site, Dr. Perez-Santiago already is completing anywhere between 3 to 5 Fibroscans daily for participants seeking medicinal advances within MASH trials. As a bilingual physician, he has shown immediate interest for the development of relationships surrounding the Mayaguez community, and thus has already aided in creating a strong foundation for the clinic’s internal database population. Being well equipped for success, the Mayaguez site remains eager to bring research trial opportunities to the island’s location given the lack of research opportunities previously present. Dr. Perez-Santiago has early on established strong relationships with current medical practices among other facilities, for future referral opportunities and follow through of trial enrollment success. -
Patricia Mercedes Morales Badillo

Dr. Patricia Mercedes Morales Badillo is a dedicated medical professional with a Doctor in Medicine degree from Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) and a strong background in internal medicine, surgery, and patient care. She completed her internship at Hospital Perea in Mayagüez, PR and has served as a hospitalist and clinical assistant in multiple institutions across Puerto Rico, including Mayagüez Medical Center and Hospital Bella Vista. Dr. Morales is fully bilingual (Spanish/English), possesses ACLS/BLS certifications, and brings over a decade of experience in both clinical and administrative healthcare roles. Her patient-centered approach, leadership in pharmacy operations, and commitment to continuous learning make her a valuable collaborator in clinical research and pharmaceutical initiatives.
